DIY Painted Cabinet Makeover: Using Sherwin Williams Upward

Painted cabinet make over! Are you tired of your cabinets? Instead of spending a fortune on replacements, lets give them a fresh, new look? Also If you do it yourself you will save a fortune! In the YouTube video, below we’ll show you how to achieve a nice finish using Sherwin-Williams White Pigmented Shellac Primer and Emerald Urethane for the top coats. Here’s a sneak peek at the process.

Step-by-Step Guide to DIY Painted Cabinets:

  1. Prep Your Space:

Before you start, make sure your workspace is well-ventilated and protected. Lay down drop cloths and remove cabinet doors and hardware. Set up a space to paint your doors. A garage or carport will work great! Just remember this is a dusty process. So wear that mask! Clean the surfaces thoroughly to remove any grease or grime. We like using Krud Kutter

  2. Sanding:

Start by sanding the sheen off the old varnish. I would recommend power sanding. Dewalt makes great tools and this is the sander we would recommend. It will last you through a lifetime of projects. Dewalt Sander . You don’t need to sand down to raw wood; just make sure there is no glossy surface left. I recommend 150 grit sand paper This step is crucial for ensuring the primer adheres properly. Rember, Nothing sticks to dust or grease.

  3. Prime with Shellac Primer:

Next, brush or roll (or both) your Shellac Primer. This primer is excellent for blocking stains and providing a smooth base for your paint. Once the primer is dry, sand it lightly to smooth out any imperfections.

  4. Apply Emerald Urethane:

Now it’s time for the finish coats. Apply two coats of Sherwin-Williams Emerald Urethane, allowing each coat to dry thoroughly before applying the next. This product provides a durable, long-lasting finish that will withstand daily use. If you need to sand your first coat to get out any imperfections do this after your first coat.

  5. Reassemble Your Cabinets:

After the final coat is dry. At least 24 hours, reattach the hardware and doors., adding a fresh touch of color to your kitchen or bathroom.

Important Considerations:

  • Cabinet Quality:

We don’t recommend this process for really nice cabinets that you want to keep for a very long time. This DIY method is best for older or lower-quality cabinets that need a face lift.

  • Professional vs. DIY:

This is not the same paint or process we use for painting cabinets professionally. If you are considering having your cabinets professionally painted, we recommend using catalyzed specialized cabinet coatings like Sherwin-Williams Gallery Series. These coatings provide a more durable and long-lasting finish suitable for high-end cabinetry.

Why This DIY Project is Worth It: Painting your cabinets is a much cheaper  way to breathe new life into your kitchen. If you’re thinking of replacing your cabinets in a few years, this is a great way to make them look good in the meantime without breaking the bank.
