So follow along, and I’ll guide you through the process we used to make our patriotic welcome mat. Also check out the video for a little more guidance if you need to.
What You’ll Need To Craft Your Personal DIY Welcome Mat:
- A brown welcome mat (This mat will work from amazon)
- Star-shaped sponges (or larger sponges if you can’t find star shapes)
- Aqua Lock primer from INSL-X
- Benjamin Moore Regal Select exterior paint in Soft Gloss
- Colors: Red (2000-10), Chantilly Lace (OC-65), and Old Glory (811)
- Scissors (if you need to cut your own star shapes)
All of the paint and primer we purchased was from our local Benjamin Moore dealer
Instructions:
- Gather Your Materials:
First, head to Target and pick up a brown door mat from the Room Essentials line. These mats are durable and perfect for outdoor use.
- Create Your Star sponge:
If you can’t find large star-shaped sponges, don’t worry! We bought round sponges and cut out our own star shapes. It’s a simple task that allows you to customize the size and style of your stars. We just found one with a quick google search and printed it out.
- Prime the Stars:
Before painting, it’s crucial to prime the areas where the stars will go. Just use your new star shaped sponge. This is also great practice for you start applying color. The white primer also creates a nice accent. We used Aqua Lock primer from INSL-X. Which your local Benjamin Moore store will carry. Applying primer first ensures that the colors will pop and not appear muted. If you skip this step, the colors might blend into the mat more than you’d like – unless that’s the look you’re going for!
- Paint the Stars:
After your primer has dried then, now comes the fun part! We used Benjamin Moore Regal Select exterior paint in Soft Gloss. The colors we chose were Red (2000-10), Chantilly Lace (OC-65), and Old Glory (811). Dip your sponges into the paint and press them onto the primed areas of the mat.
TIP Don’t press too hard or you may lose the shape of your stars.
- Let It Dry:
After painting, let your welcome mat dry completely. You dont want people walking through your door with wet paint on their shoes. NOT GOOD
- Display:
Once dry, your 4th of July welcome mat is ready to go. Place it at your front door and greet your guests with a burst of patriotic pride.
This DIY welcome mat is a great way to show off your creativity and add a unique touch to your 4th of July party. It’s an easy project that doesn’t look cheese, and your guests will surely appreciate your patriotic efforts!
